Sleep
This month I thought it would be a good idea to focus on sleep, especially during December while some of us are busy.
I’m sure you already know a lot about why it’s so important to get enough sleep. However it’s always good to be reminded.
Are you getting enough? Is it good quality?
I’m very guilty of sleeping at around 11/11.30pm or later sometimes on a regular basis even though I’m aware of how important it is to sleep early.
I know I could be feeling better in my body and mind if I slept earlier. So I always have to make a conscious effort to sleep earlier.
In case you need some reminders why it’s so important to get good sleep, here are a few reasons;
-
We reach for the wrong food when we are tired and tend to choose sugar, caffeine or something that will keep us awake
-
Our hours before 12 pm are the most important as this is when our body detoxes.
- Researchers found that dieters who were well rested lost more fat than those who were sleep deprived, who lost more muscle mass.
-
We are more focused and alert, as well as more energy.
-
We are more likely to get up earlier to exercise, which defiantly has it’s benefits.
-
Enough sleep improves our immune system
-
It helps to curb inflammation in the body which effects; heart disease, stroke, diabetes, arthritis and premature aging. Research indicates that people who get less sleep have higher blood levels of inflammatory proteins than those who get more.
- It is said to improve our creative process as it strengthens the emotional components of a memory
- Lack of sleep can contribute to anxiety and depression. Good sleep promotes emotional stability
Some reminders to help us sleep easier and earlier are;
-
Try to eat early so you are not going to bed on a full stomach.
-
Shut down your lap top or iPhone at least 1 hour before bed time (this is my challenge)
-
Read a book in bed rather than your phone to help you wind down and prevent the blue light of the device interrupting your sleep rhythm
-
Make sure you are sleeping in a dark space to help you sleep deeply.
- Create a peaceful space and surrounds to help you sleep; e.g. clean sheets, less clutter etc.
This month lets aim for 10pm to bed!
Let me know how you go and what your sleeping patters are like.
Em x
