Emma is absolutely incredible - her level of knowledge and her nurturing approach has been an absolute game changer for me. I have been doing Pilates for 5 or more years in group classes and thought I was so strong and had great form, however after some tailored sessions with Em I couldn’t believe how wrong I had been doing things. This led me to having tense muscles, weak shoulders neck and arms and core which caused me postural issues and more. I have been so happy and thrilled with my progress over 5 sessions, my strength and form has improved, my tension has eased and my posture has already improved. I cannot wait to see what more will come!
Emma is very experienced and knowledgeable about Pilates and she tailored an exercise program to meet my needs. She is friendly and provides an excellent service. I highly recommend Emma.

I spent 9 months in excruciating pain with my shoulder. Scans showed tendinitis, arthritis, bursitis and calcification. Doctor recommended cortisone which I wasn't keen on. The acupuncturist upstairs recommended Em. I was in so much pain but did not expect any relief and was considering cortisone. In just 2 private sessions, I went from a 8/9 in pain down to a 2. I slept for the first time in 9 months and my quality of life changed for the better. I went from not being able to tie my hair up or dress/undress myself or enjoy daily life. Now after 5 sessions I am back working a physically demanding job without having to pay staff to help when I can't move with pain. I am so thankful and can feel my body getting stronger and my shoulder pain easing with every session. Highly recommend Em.

At 61, I needed to start moving more & increase my flexibility.  I had tried group Pilates sessions before with little success.

It wasn’t until I found Emma & started private classes that everything changed!

Emma quickly identified the issues & got started on creating movement in my back & connecting my core … we found it!

The private classes are so beneficial as we incorporate different techniques to support my body & also work on stretching, breathing & meditation.

My core strength has increased & I have so much more flexibility & balance.  Mostly my shoulders have moved down away from my ears!

So grateful to have found Emma & the best investment I’ve made taking private classes!

Emma has been amazing at getting me back on track with my health and fitness. As someone struggling with sciatic nerve pain, she is giving me a new lease on life providing me incredibly useful exercises and advice to get back on track. She is kind, patient and has a wealth of knowledge to suit individual client needs. Would recommend her to anyone from those recovering from injury to those looking to enhance their physical capabilities and strength.

I have had the most amazing one on one sessions with Emma. After 7 years of restricted movement in my left hip, with Emma's gentle care, I experienced a huge release of both tension and emotion from my hip, buttocks and shoulders in the first session, and the ability to walk freely in my second session! Absolutely mind blowing experience. I am so very grateful!

So grateful to have Emma's studio here in Burleigh Heads! I've struggled with lower back pain for years and she is extremely knowledgeable in this space. It feels like a workout, rehab and relaxation all in one! Emma knows the body inside and out and she is by far the most experienced instructor I've ever come across.

I am into my second year of working with Emma online and I love it! In fact I resigned from the gym to work out at home with Emma's brilliant instruction. There are so many classes available to work different body parts, and Emma's directions are specific and easy to follow. She knows just where you need to focus in each exercise. I love the variety and the monthly calendar. I am looking forward to visiting her new studio when I am on the Gold Coast.

Emma is the most amazing fitness instructor I have ever come across. I have been doing pilates with her for just over 2 years now and I hope she never stops teaching and offering her programs! I am so much stronger than when I started and basically have stopped needing to go my PT for adjustments as my core strength now helps my lower back issues stay away. Emma is super knowledgeable, gives great cues, and somehow during online classes she just knows what to remind me of! Money well spent, great value, and something you would never regret trying - she is 5 star all the way!

“I have been taking classes at Emma’s studio for a few months now.
Prior to this I was at a larger studio and found that I was getting injuries and had chronic problems in my body due to the size and nature of the classes. Since I have been doing Emma’s classes my body is now flexible and I no longer have any of these problems.

Emma’s classes are different. They are very personalised. She works with each person’s individual needs and body type. I would recommend Emma’s sessions to anyone who is looking for a studio with personalised attention in a lovely warm relaxed environment.”

    Can anyone do Pilates?

Pilates is beneficial for people of all ages, fitness levels and body conditions.

I like to think of Pilates as a bridge between physical fitness and physical therapy. It can be adapted, modified and customised for individual needs.

Some advanced moves and sequences will challenge the most elite athlete while other exercises are suitable for even the frailest physique.

I have never done Pilates before. What should I expect?

If you’re new to Pilates, it is always advisable to start with a private consultation. Where we can discuss your needs and I can tailor a program to suit your individual body.

Beginner Pilates sessions move at a slower pace and give you plenty of time to adjust to each exercise and learn the fundamental principles of Pilates.

Once you understand the basics, you maybe ready to move onto a small group class, which I will be offering at a later stage.

At the end of class, expect to feel refreshed, both physically and mentally, and surprised at how an exercise that doesn’t involve running or jumping feels like a real workout!

I haven't worked out in a while. Is Pilates still safe for me to try?

You don’t need to be at any fitness or flexibility level to start Pilates. In fact it’s one of the best places to start.

I often offer modifications to many of the exercises and encourage you to workout at your own pace. It’s always ok to take a break if you need to during a workout. I encourage my clients to always listen to their body.

Please see the next question “if i have an injury” to have more detail around this topic.

What if I have back problems and or another type of injury?

I have helped hundreds of clients reduce pain and rehabilitate from injury.

Various conditions but not limited to, disc buldge/herniation, spondolythesis, scoliosis, knee injuries – meniscus tear, hip bursitis, rotator cuff injuries, ankle or foot pain/injuries, after c-section or hysterectomy rehabilitation, polio conditions, and one of my regular clients was blind.

Developing strong core muscles can definitely help improve back problems. Many people find Pilates is an excellent choice for preventing or managing existing injuries.

I always recommend a private consultation when you have an injury or pain as well as getting a clearance from your physio or doctor before trying classes or exercise program.

Will Pilates help me loose weight?

You will be building and toning your muscles and muscles continue to burn calories, even after you have finished the class.

Sometimes our classes incorporate an element of cardio to help get your heart rate up. It is always good to incorporate some cardio workouts with your Pilates if you are wanting to loose weight. However with a healthy diet and a good mix of classes, you can definitely lose weight.

How long do I have to do Pilates for to see the results?

It’s up to you how often you practice Pilates, however our recommendation to see results is at least two or three times a week.

Joseph Pilates famously said: “In 10 classes you will feel the difference, In 20 classes you will see the difference, and in 30 classes you will have a whole new body.”

It is also important to maintain a proper diet and engage in other activities such as cardio.

Do I have to be flexible to do Pilates?

Definitely not! You will enjoy the many benefits of Pilates no matter how flexible you are. Over time, as you continue to practice Pilates, your body will become more flexible.

What is the difference between Yoga & Pilates?

Here are 5 differences and some similarities…

    Similarities between Pilates & Yoga

    Both help to;

    • Increase body awareness
    • Help concentration
    • Improve posture and alignment of body

    PILATES

    1. Focuses on strengthening – especially the core and smaller stabilizing muscles of the joins. Pilates works the body with a stable base of support.
    2. Is a more physical form of exercise with a focus on the brth and living a health lifestyle
    3. Pilates is dynamic and usually keeps you moving. There is less holding poses and stretches. Although there are various styles that do add stretches.
    4. Pilates is uses for rehabilitation with great success, and often works alongside physiotherapy. Depending on the style of Pilates is offers modifications suitable for injury and can be tailored to most body types. Sometimes props or equipment are used to help rehabilitation.
    5. Developed by German born, Joseph H. Pilates during World War 1. He drew influences from Yoga and many other forms of exercises such as martial arts, acrobatics and weight lifting.

    YOGA

    1. Focuses more on stretching, flexibility and strength. Its focus is more looking at the whole body as the core.
    2. Yoga has a far more spiritual element as well as physical and also focuses on breath and a healthy lifestyle.
    3. Yoga (depending on the style) can be dynamic and have a flow, yet can also focus on holding poses and stretches.
    4. Yoga is also great for rehabilitation, and sometimes also needs to be modified depending on your specific injury. Some yoga styles are better suited for rehabilitation or modifying for your specific body type, such as Iyengar. Yoga also uses props to modify.
    5. Yoga originated in India. The Yoga Sutras (aphorisms or sentences) were written about 2000 years ago by a sage (someone who has attained wisdom) called Pantanjali.
