Whoohoo!

Today is Day 1 of our 21 Day Challenge – Introduction to Pilates!

I created this challenge to help you build a habit of healthy movement on a regular basis.

You’ll be amazed at how just 10 – 15 mins of Pilates, Barre or Yoga each day will leave you feeling stronger, more flexible and toned plus calmer in the mind.

Please read these last few notes below before you begin your introduction…

    • This challenge will start off steady and the intensity will increase as the weeks go on.
If you’re new or just getting back into exercise, please know your own limits, listen to your body,
take the modifications and rest any time you need to until you build up strength.

    • When practicing these methods ideally you don’t want to feel back pain or neck pain
Be sure to lower your head anytime for a break if you feel neck pain in sit ups.

    • If you feel back pain focus on engaging your deep core muscles, and also check your
alignment, these may help relieve any pain.

    • Note – there is a difference in working your back muscles and strengthening them, compared to
feeling pain in the back muscles that is not good, uncomfortable or is
over doing it. You will need to start to learn the difference. So take it easy until you do understand.

    • For those with osteoarthritis, please refrain from loaded flexion, which is rounding your back
and putting weight on it at the same time. e.g. rolling back on your back. Also avoid rolling forward
and down from standing. Please reach out to me if you are unsure of your limitations.

    • For those of you with as Diastasis, Prolapse or if you are new to exercise since giving birth, please
leave out your chest lift (sit ups) and planks and just focus on the lower abdominal strengthening.
Or even better check out my Core Restore Program . This is specific training for these conditions. Reach out to me for the challenge participant discount if you decide to join up.

Just trying out my day 1 after procrastinating for so long.
Feels so good where I got a nice stretch.
I`m so scared how the intensity going to build up from here, because Day 1 feels quite challenging for me. It is because my muscles are stiff and weak ?

    • Emma Jory

Hi Lynn, don’t worry Day 1 was challenging as there are all diff levels. It’s also challenging for me too.
Take a break when you need to and just do what you feel. Don’t push yourself and take it easy if you want.
You will love the rest so keep going and remember these things in each class. xx

I did Pilates years ago. I enjoyed the workout.

I did get a little confused about the inhale and exhale on some exercises as you would sometimes instruct the breath and either times not, or I would inhale and then you would provide more instruction/explanation during which I was waiting to exhale!

I think, for me, watching it through first helped before attempting it.

    Reply
    • Emma Jory

Hi Beth, Yes it can be confusing sometimes. I agree, but watching once is a great idea. Have you watched my principle about breathing? It will help you understand it more. Em x

      Reply
    • Emma Jory

YEs it can be tricky at first. The key is not to worry too much when you first begin. just learning not to hold your breath is important. However if you can learn to do it the way we teach great. Can yo watch the breathing video I have provided – it may help. one of the principles of pilates. As a general rule (but not alwayss) we exhale when we exert the energy or contract the body/round forward, and in inhale when we prepare or open up the body. Hope that helps x

Fantastic class – thank you so much. I’ve done pilates and yoga on and off for years but these days I can no longer sit cross legged on the floor – I can’t get my knees any lower than elbow height. The main problem is pain in my left hip. I have osteoarthritis in my knees and – I suspect – my hips. I tend to just put my legs in front of me, legs bent, knees apart, instead – otherwise I can’t sit upright. I’m not sure if this is due to general tightness so I should gently try and increase it a bit each day, or if it’s due to the arthritis, maybe bone on bone, and I shouldn’t even try to sit cross legged.

    Any advice please?

    Thanks, Mari

Try to watch my initial videos the principle video in my Essential course – it will help with the neck pain. in the meantime be sure to nod your chin slightly before lifting your head up. It will help if you look towards you knees without lifting you head before you do sit up moves. Or just don’t do the chest living its fine.

I neee to work on my core more. I could feel it pulling my lower back where ive had a muscle issue for 6 years on left side. And could feel my neck pulling a little bit. Had trouble staying up at the extra height with those twist stomach ones once you let go of knees.

Make sure you are not extending your legs if you are feeling back tension. Keep the knees bent anytime in your pilates rather than straight .
If you feel neck tension be sure to keep your head down. Two things you must avoid in pilates is neck and back tension. There are ways to avoid this until you build up strength. Did you do the essential course? This will help with all these things. Re the twisting one, you can keep your legs bent. That is the modification. x

Hi be sure to never feel strain in the neck. If you do put your head down. Dont over do it until you get stronger. I have a great video in my essential course if you are feeling neck tension this is wise to do this program. I teach you some great tips. Find the link to get this program in the first welcome email – go to the free principle videos and you will see it. Thanks for waiting on my response.

Excellent first day. This is exactly what I need. My back and core are weak and this workout felt great. Opening the shoulders also felt invigorating. Sitting at a desk all day has pulled my shoulders forward. I didn’t realize how much until I did this workout. Thank you!!

Don’t worry too much about the breathing…it is important you don’t hold your breath, thats’ all at the beginning. So focus on the moves, and any breath is fine. IT will come with time xx
