Prevent Procrastination

This months focus is driven by my own habits – or lack there of in this area! 

I have spent the last 4 days putting together a full year of accounts for my accountant! 

I’m the worst when it comes to procrastination in this area of my life. 

They say how you do one thing in your life is actually how you do most things. I think for me that is true. I’ve always been a crammer, ever since I was young at school,having to study for exams. I would prepare quite a while before sometimes, but I also still did a lot of cramming! 

My mum always reminds me of it, she doesn’t panic any more when she hears me say i have this or that to do (usually in a short space of time) as she knows how I operate and that I will always get it done! haha

However, this is not the most efficient or healthy way to work. Every year, (after the sense of achievement is felt from finishing the accounts), I say that I will be more organised and not leave it to the last minute again. Yet of course every year I do! When I had my Pilates studio and I was registered for GST, it was great because it forced me to do the accounts each quarter. 

I find I do all the fun and easy things first and the more mundane jobs last of course.

 

So how are your organisational skills? Are you a prepared person that does everything in advance? 

When I used to work in a corporate office, (many years ago now), our department used to follow and operate using the principles of Steven Covey’s: 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Have you heard of this book?  We were all put through his 3 day training. It was brilliant as it meant we all spoke the same language and we were very efficient. 

I feel it’s time for me to revisit these principles again and I wanted to share some of them with you.

Habit 3 of the 7 Habits is;

“Put First Things First” – this means to execute the most important things first. 

He suggests to plan this every week;

  1. Connect with your mission, roles and goals
  2. Schedule the big rocks (the most important things for you)
  3. Organise the rest

He references Quadrant 1, 2,3, 4. I have put up the table for you to take a look at (see above). 

Working in the Quadrant 2 is key – not Quadrant 1 like I tend to do now and then!
