5 Reasons Why Pilates Is Great for Women Midlife & Beyond
I was chatting to a client the other day about how good Pilates is for those of us in midlife and beyond.
It seems obvious, doesn’t it,
However thought you may find some of the facts interesting;
(plus I’ve included a Free class for you to try below)
Here are some of the reasons why:
1. Pilates is Low Impact & Joint-Friendly
Aching joints are one of the biggest reasons women struggle to stick with exercise in midlife. Declining estrogen, inflammation, and oxidative stress can take a toll on muscles, tendons, and ligaments.
Pilates strengthens, lengthens, and releases tension, making it an incredibly effective form of resistance training—without stressing your joints.
2. Prevents Injuries & Supports Recovery
One of the best things about Pilates? It’s not just great for fitness—it’s also a powerful tool for injury prevention and rehab.
It helps improve core strength and spinal alignment, making it ideal for managing back pain and conditions like:
✔️ Frozen shoulders
✔️ Rotator cuff injuries
✔️ Sciatica pain
✔️ Knee & hip issues
✔️ Plantar fasciitis
✔️ Fibromyalgia—and more!
3. Promotes Better Sleep
Hormonal changes can disrupt sleep, and when we’re exhausted, we’re less inclined to move.
Sleep is essential for recovery, metabolism, and overall well-being, but intense workouts can sometimes increase inflammation—especially when done too late in the day.
Pilates, on the other hand, can be more gentle and restorative, depending on on the class, with a focus on breathwork that helps lower stress hormones like cortisol, making it the perfect choice for calming the nervous system and improving sleep quality.
4. Supports Good Posture & Youthful Movement
Did you know that your posture can make you look and feel more youthful?
As we age, forward head posture and rounded upper backs become common due to muscle imbalances and years of poor movement habits. Pilates helps correct and prevent these issues, promoting proper spinal alignment, better biomechanics, and a more confident, upright stance.
5. Boosts Coordination, Balance & Brain Health
Pilates isn’t just great for the body—it’s amazing for the brain.
Because it requires focused, controlled movements, it enhances coordination, spatial awareness, and cognitive function. Plus, it can help:
✔️ Reduce anxiety & stress (a common menopause symptom!)
✔️ Improve balance to prevent falls
✔️ Build new neural pathways—keeping your brain sharp as you age
This year, I turned 50. I do a mix of workouts, but nothing makes me feel stronger—inside and out—than Pilates.
I like to say Pilates is like the “staple in our exercise diet” – like vegetables are in our diet. It is essential to keep our body balanced, strong and in good working order.
Ready to Feel Stronger, more Toned, Energized & Confident?
