May Focus – Technique / Mind Body Connection

Pilates was created by Joseph Pilates. It was however originally called Contrology. It was only named Pilates after he passed away, to honour him and his work. The name Contrology, was developed because we are aiming to control the body. Pilates (as well as Yoga) are mind body exercises. We are not just moving without awareness. We focus on the movement and how we are moving.

This month we will focus on technique. I have included all the Essential Exercises in the monthly calendar, and I encourage everyone to go back to the basics this month and remember the essence of the exercises.

If we start to improve the technique we will feel more at ease in the pose, yet at the same time more challenged.

When we focus on how the body moves, we can start to learn about our needs. Eg perhaps where we feel tight or weak, and address these imbalances. Our body when working harmoniously is balanced. Due to life habits and posture etc, we start to develop imbalances. These can cause pain and or discomfort. Pilates (and yoga) help to improve minimise these imbalances.

This month my challenge for you is to work through all the essential exercise library and let me know how you go and what discoveries you make!
